Composite Veneers in Turkey

Composite veneers cover the whole front of a tooth with tooth-coloured resin, layered and shaped by hand directly in the mouth. They change the shape and shade of a group of teeth in one appointment, usually without drilling, and at our clinic in Antalya they are priced per tooth on their own line of our price list.

What composite veneers are

A composite veneer is a layer of composite resin built over the entire visible surface of a tooth, from the gum line to the biting edge. You may also see them called direct veneers, resin veneers or bonded veneers. They sit in our veneers in Antalya range as the option made in the chair rather than in the lab: there is no impression, no waiting for a technician and no temporary teeth.

They use the same material as composite bonding. The difference is how much of the tooth is covered and what the work is for. Bonding a chip repairs one part of one tooth. A set of composite veneers redesigns how several teeth look together: their length, width, outline and colour.

What they do not do is the same as for any veneer. They do not move teeth, fix a bite, or strengthen a tooth that is broken or mostly filling.

Composite veneers, bonding a chip and E-max veneers

These three are often confused, so it helps to set them side by side.

Bonding a chip or an edge

A small amount of composite added to one corner, one edge or one gap. The rest of the tooth is left as it is, and the new piece is matched to it. It is quick and suits a single problem on a tooth that otherwise looks right.

Composite veneers

The whole front face of the tooth is covered, usually on several neighbouring teeth, so the shape and shade are set by the composite rather than by the tooth underneath. This is a design job as much as a repair: the teeth have to look right together and in proportion to your face. It takes much longer per tooth than an edge repair, and there is more composite surface to polish and look after over the years.

E-max veneers

Thin shells of Ivoclar IPS e.max glass-ceramic, milled and finished in our in-house lab and bonded on. Porcelain keeps its colour and gloss far longer than composite and suits bigger changes, but a thin layer of enamel is usually removed first, the lab needs a few days, and a chipped porcelain veneer is usually remade rather than repaired.

Who they suit, and who they do not

Composite veneers usually suit you if

  • several front teeth are uneven in size, shape or length, or worn at the edges;
  • you have small gaps across the smile rather than one;
  • you want a visible change while keeping your enamel, and would like the option of changing your mind later;
  • your teeth are healthy and roughly in line, and you are happy to have them polished and touched up from time to time.

We would suggest something else if

  • Only one small part needs fixing. A single chip or corner is edge composite bonding, not a veneer.
  • Your teeth are much darker than you want. Covering a dark tooth with a thin layer of resin can look grey. Teeth whitening first may be enough, or porcelain may hide the colour better.
  • Your teeth are crowded or stick out. Adding composite makes them look bulkier. Clear aligners first often means fewer veneers, or none.
  • You grind heavily or bite your nails. Composite chips more easily than porcelain. It is not ruled out, but a night guard becomes part of the plan, and E-max may last better.
  • A tooth is broken, root-treated or heavily filled. It needs the protection of a crown.

How much of your tooth is touched

This is the main reason people choose composite. In most cases the composite is added to the tooth rather than replacing any of it. The surface is cleaned and lightly etched so the resin can grip, and that is all. Occasionally a sharp edge is smoothed or a tooth that sits slightly forward is reshaped a little so the veneer does not look thick; if that is needed, the dentist tells you at the planning stage and it is written in your plan.

Because the enamel is mostly left intact, composite veneers keep your options open. They can be polished, repaired, rebuilt or removed later, and porcelain can still be considered in future. That is not true once teeth have been prepared for E-max.

How composite veneers are built

Good composite veneers depend on the hands of the dentist more than on any machine, because each one is sculpted freehand. The work usually follows the same order.

  • The design. For a set of veneers, the new shapes are planned first, often with Digital Smile Design on photographs of your face, so the length and width of each tooth suit your lips and smile line. Where it helps, a quick trial in composite can be placed on the teeth, without bonding, so you can see the shape in a mirror.
  • The shade. Chosen in daylight, before the teeth dry out, because dry teeth look lighter. If you are whitening, it is done first and the shade is chosen once the colour has settled.
  • The layers. The composite is placed in thin layers: a more opaque body shade, then a more translucent layer towards the edge, much as natural enamel is built. Each layer is set with a curing light.
  • Shaping and polishing. The dentist refines the outline, checks how the teeth meet when you bite and slide your jaw, then polishes each veneer in stages to a natural shine.

Several teeth can take most of a day, and the dentist works on the teeth as a group so that they match.

Your treatment, day by day in Antalya

Before you travel

Send us photographs taken in daylight: your face smiling fully, a close-up of your front teeth as you smile, and your teeth slightly apart. Tell us what you would like to change and whether you want whiter teeth. A dentist replies with whether composite or porcelain suits you better, roughly how many teeth are involved, and a written price. Nothing is booked until you have read it. You can send the photos when you book a free consultation, or on WhatsApp.

Day one: examination and design

The dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, and takes digital X-rays where a tooth needs checking. The design is agreed with you, and you sign off the plan in writing: which teeth, what changes, and the price.

Treatment day

The veneers are layered, shaped and polished as described above. Most people need no anaesthetic. You leave with the finished teeth the same day.

Before you fly

Where your dates allow, we see you again to check your bite after a day of eating, smooth anything that catches your lip or tongue, and give a final polish.

How many days and visits

On our price list composite work is a single visit. For a set of composite veneers we usually suggest allowing about three days in Antalya: the examination and design, the treatment day, and a check before your flight. Whitening first adds time for the colour to settle. Your written plan confirms the days for your own case before you book flights. Treat the figures on this page as typical, not promised. Our Antalya page helps with the rest of the trip.

The price

Composite veneers have their own line on our dental price list, at €100 per tooth. You pay for each tooth that is veneered, so the total depends on how many teeth show when you smile and how many need changing. For comparison, an E-max veneer is €230 per tooth.

When you compare the two, think about the years ahead as well as the first bill. Composite usually needs polishing, repairs and, eventually, replacing sooner than porcelain. Whitening, and anything the examination finds such as a filling, are separate lines in your written plan. The treatment plan builder shows how a combination adds up.

Living with composite veneers

The first week

  • The teeth can feel a little fuller to your tongue for a day or two.
  • Go easy on tea, coffee, red wine and curry for the first couple of days.
  • Cut up hard food such as apples and crusty bread rather than biting into it with your front teeth.

Back home

Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Tell your hygienist you have composite veneers, so they polish them gently rather than use a harsh paste. Composite picks up surface stain and loses some shine over time; a professional polish usually brings it back. Wear a night guard if you grind. If a piece chips, send us a photo on WhatsApp; small chips are usually repaired by adding composite, here or by your own dentist.

Composite veneers last for years, but fewer than porcelain, and how many depends on your bite and habits. Our guide to how long dental work lasts sets out what the research says.

Risks, and what can go wrong

  • Chipping, especially on the biting edges and with grinding. Usually repaired easily.
  • Staining and loss of gloss, faster with smoking and dark drinks.
  • Colour mismatch later. Composite does not respond to whitening, so whitening afterwards can leave the veneers darker than your other teeth.
  • Bulk. Too much composite can make teeth look thick. Planning the shape first is how this is avoided.
  • Gum irritation where composite meets the gum, if that edge is not kept clean.

We will not promise an exact result: composite is shaped by hand and judged by eye, and teeth and bites vary. What we can do is plan the shape with you, check it as we go, and see you again before you leave.

QuestionsComposite veneers questions

Are composite veneers the same as composite bonding?

They use the same material, but the job is different, and composite veneers have their own line on our price list. Bonding usually repairs part of a tooth, such as a chipped corner or a small gap. A composite veneer covers the whole front of the tooth, usually on several teeth, to change their shape and colour together. It takes longer per tooth and there is more surface to look after.

Should I choose composite or E-max veneers?

Composite suits people who want to keep their enamel, want the work done in one appointment and are happy with more upkeep. E-max veneers keep their colour and gloss longer and suit bigger changes, especially on darker teeth, but usually need a thin layer of enamel removed. The dentist will suggest one after seeing your photographs.

How much do composite veneers cost?

Composite veneers have their own line on our price list, at €100 per tooth, so the total depends on how many teeth are treated. Your written plan lists each tooth and confirms the price before you travel. Whitening or other treatment is priced separately in the same plan.

Will my teeth be filed down?

Usually not. The surface is cleaned and lightly etched so the composite can grip, and the resin is added on top. Occasionally a sharp edge is smoothed, or a tooth that sits forward is reshaped a little so the veneer does not look bulky. If that is needed, the dentist tells you at the planning stage and it is written in your plan.

How long do composite veneers last?

They last for years, but not as long as porcelain before they need attention. Most people need an occasional polish or small repair, and eventually the composite is replaced. How long yours last depends on your bite, whether you grind, and habits such as smoking and dark drinks. Regular hygiene visits and a night guard if you grind make the biggest difference.

Can composite veneers be whitened?

No. Composite does not change colour with whitening. If you want whiter teeth, have whitening first and let the colour settle, then the composite is matched to the new shade. Whitening after the veneers are placed can leave them darker than your other teeth, and then they may need redoing.

Can composite veneers be removed or replaced with porcelain later?

Usually, yes. Because little or no enamel is removed, the composite can be taken off and the tooth either rebuilt in composite or prepared for porcelain at a later date. That flexibility is one of the main reasons people start with composite. Your dentist at home, or we, can advise when the time comes.

How long do I need to stay in Antalya?

For a set of composite veneers we usually suggest about three days: the examination and design, the treatment day, and a check before you fly. The veneers themselves are usually done in one long appointment. If you are having whitening first, allow extra time for the colour to settle. Your written plan gives the days for your own case.

Do composite veneers hurt?

Most people find them comfortable. Because the composite is usually added without drilling, an anaesthetic is often not needed. If a tooth needs a little shaping or is sensitive, it is numbed first. Afterwards the teeth may feel slightly fuller to your tongue for a day or two, and your jaw may feel tired after a long appointment.
